Did you know that Kambaba Jasper is also known as Star Galaxy Jasper and is also called Crocodile Jasper and Green Stromatolite?

Kambaba Jasper is actually classed as a stromatolite (a fossil) as opposed to a Jasper. A clump of fossilised algae created this mineral and gave it distinctive patterns and colour.

Jasper is a variety of Quartz which contains an element of other materials/inclusions, such as organic material and mineral material and it is these inclusions that determine the colours, patterns and appearance within the Gemstone. When you look at any type of Jasper it is usually multicoloured with curious patterns.

Jasper can be cut into many shapes and can be cut very thinly and what we love about it as Jewellery makers is how highly polished Jasper can be. Most Jaspers have the same gemmological characteristics and have different trade names that enable us to identify the type of Jasper. They are largely spotted/orbicular or banded/striped.
