AQUAMARINE GEMMOLOGY FACTS:
Aquamarine is a blue variety of Beryl that crystallises in hexagonal columns. The blue hues of this Gem come from minor traces of iron. This Crystal is a very rare and historic Gemstone. This Mineral was first recorded around 400 B.C. in Greece, but it has been used by multiple societies for over 2,000 years. Aquamarine can be found in the United States, Brazil, Australia, and several other African countries.
Aquamarine grows in a long Crystal, and its inclusions are known as ‘rain-like’. Our Briolette Pear Focal has been cut to show off these fantastic ‘rain-like’ inclusions, giving them an unusual appearance and making them highly eye-catching. Aquamarine tends to have a very light blue colour.
The Gemstones within the Beryl family are allochromatic Gems. This means they are coloured by inclusion within the Gems structure. The opposite of this is idiochromatic Gems, where the colouring agent is integral to the structure of the Gem – Peridot is an example of an idiochromatic Gemstone.
Gemstones with rich blue colour are the most popular and therefore the most valuable. Aquamarines are available in a wide range of sizes, and lapidaries have cut Gems weighing several hundred carats, far too large to be worn or made into Jewellery! Many tonnes of Beryl Crystals have been discovered, but they are never of Gem quality.
The name Aquamarine comes from the Latin word for water – Aqua, and the Latin for the sea – Marina.
Aquamarine is the birthstone of March.
There are many famous Aquamarines – our favourite being Queen Elizabeth’s Aquamarine Tiara. It was commissioned by Her Majesty herself; it started its life as a matching Necklace and Earring set, which was presented to the Queen in 1953.
Did you know Aquamarine is Chalmers Gems’ Director Sheena’s favourite Gemstone? You can read why in our Blog HERE.
CRYSTAL HEALING PROPERTIES: WHAT IS AQUAMARINE GOOD FOR?
Aquamarine’s soft and soothing hues of sea blue are associated with those wanting to overcome judgementalism and calm the mind.
Aquamarine (meaning seawater) is full of feminine energy, ruled by the moon! A very peaceful and harmonious Gemstone, Aquamarine can be playful and mischievous too!
Aquamarine is a unique Stone that aids in the creation of a clear channel between your Heart and Throat Chakras. This vital link enables one to always speak from the heart and to the highest truths. This Beryl variety is ideal for assisting you in the resolution of conflicts, debates, and disagreements. Aquamarine can also help you to calm down those raging emotions that want to consume us.
Choosing to wear or carry an Aquamarine piece daily will assist you in selecting the appropriate words, tone, and opinions when speaking to someone. Aquamarine’s energy can boost one’s confidence when speaking in front of a large crowd and can assist with the most severe stage fright, allowing it to float away. This Gemstone is here to prove your impressive communication skills to the world and how they can be used to engage large crowds or have more personal conversations.
Did you know that Aquamarine was used as a talisman of good luck, fearlessness, and protection? A Stone of courage, its calming energies, can reduce stress. Perfect for today’s current climate!
