Tanzanite, rarer than Diamonds but not quite as well-known, has risen in popularity since its discovery 50 years ago.

Tanzanite is a beautiful form of Zoisite that ranges in colour from ultramarine to Sapphire blue. This in-demand blue Gemstone is created during a heating process turning an unappealing brown Stone into the stunning Gem we know and love. Tanzanite is frequently confused with Sapphire, but the main distinction between the two Crystals is Tanzanite’s brilliant range of purple and blue hues.

Because Zoisite Crystals appear as ordinary brown pebbles, the Gemstone was unknown until 1962, legend says when lightning caused a bushfire that, by chance, heated some surfaced rocks to the needed temperature. Soon after, a local Masai cattle herder noticed a Stone gleaming in the sun, and Tanzanite was discovered. When the Stone arrived at New York jewellers Tiffany and Co, it was named “Tanzanite” after its country of origin and began its meteoric rise to fame.

Gemmologically, Tanzanite is quite an exciting material exhibiting a phenomenon called Trichroism, meaning it may show three different colours or shades in various orientations. So it is vital to use a master craftsman to cut this Gemstone to ensure the best colours are captured
