Sterling Opal Gemmology Facts:

Sterling Opal is a synthetic Gemstone – this means it is man-made. It mimics the colours and appearance of natural Opal. You may also find Sterling Opal called Monarch Opal.

The variety of colours you can see in our Sterling Opal is a result of Bragg diffraction of light. The bright and luminous colours often have veins and patterns running throughout the material. These black lines are called Potch Lines. Unlike other lab-created Opals, Sterling Opals do not contain any dyes. This is because they are mainly created using nano-silica in moulds.

Sterling Opal was first made by Jim Zachary – the same individual who created the method of Zachary’s Process/Treatment of Turquoise.
