What is a Cabochon?
A Cabochon is a gemstone that has been shaped and polished with a smooth, domed top and usually a flat back, rather than being cut with facets. This shape shows off colour, pattern and optical effects such as the glow of Moonstone or the flash of Labradorite, and the flat back makes Cabochons easy to set in jewellery.
Calibrated or freeform?
Calibrated Cabochons are cut to standard sizes (such as 10 x 8mm or 14 x 10mm), so they fit ready-made bezel cups and settings. Freeform Cabochons follow the natural shape of the stone, making each one unique and ideal for wire wrapping, metalsmithing and one-off designs. Read our guide: Freeform vs Calibrated Cabochons.
