Gemstone Guide

Expert gemstone knowledge from gemmologist Marie Chalmers.

Every gemstone has its own story, from the minerals that form it to the hands that mine and cut it.

We've put together what we know about each gemstone we sell, what it actually is, how to buy it well, and the real story behind where it came from.

We're adding new guides most months, so if your stone isn't here yet, check back soon.

Lapis Lazuli Nuggets 7 x 5 - 9 x 6mm 38cm Strand

Lapis Lazuli

Lapis lazuli has been mined in the same Afghan mountains for over 6,000 years, and the blue pigment made from it was once worth more than gold. Prized by pharaohs, painters and jewellery makers alike, even its name reflects its famous colour, coming from words meaning “stone of azure”.

Rainbow Moonstone Mixed Shape Cabochons Approx 20 - 30mm 5 Piece Pack

Moonstone

Moonstone gets its name from the way it looks. Turn it in the light and a soft glow drifts across the surface, like moonlight caught in stone. It comes in a wider range of colours than some people expect, from cool white to warm peach, each with its own version of that signature glow.

Amethyst 6 mm Smooth Rounds 38 cm Strand

Amethyst

Amethyst is one of the world’s most recognisable gemstones, prized for its rich purple colour and versatility. Popular with jewellery makers, collectors and designers alike, it is available in a wide range of shades, shapes and sizes.
