Agate Gemmology Facts: 

This Gemstone is an absolute favourite at Chalmers Gems, as every piece is unique. Agate takes 50 million years to form from the deposition of layers of silica that fill voids in volcanic rocks.

Agate Nodules are commonly found within the cavities. The layers form in stages, with new layers often creating alternating colours.

There are countless varieties of Agate, and their names tend to be associated with their appearance. For example, Blue Lace demonstrates baby blue and white lace-like branding, whereas Fire Agate comes in deep oranges and red giving it a fiery appearance.

Druzy Agates can be found largely in Brazil. However, it’s primarily mined in Mexico, South America, Europe and United States. Druzy Crystals are composed of tiny little crystals that sparkle on the surface of a rather sizeable crystalline body.

Much Agate is dyed to give it vibrant colours, which accentuates the material’s striations.
