Mahogany Obsidian Gemmology Facts:

Obsidian is a natural glass formed by the rapid cooling of volcanic lava. A Crystalline structure would have been created if the lava had been allowed to cool slowly.

Mahogany Obsidian is a variety of Obsidian other varieties include silver-sheen, green, gold-sheen, black and electric blue.

It has a dark red and black body colour due to the presence of iron and magnesium in its structure. The iron inclusions create the red and black stripes and swirls. The bands within the Stone is how Mahogany Obsidian can be recognised. 

The majority of Mahogany Obsidian is found in Mexico.
