Pietersite Gemmology Facts: 

The effect you see within the Pietersite is called chaotic chatoyancy, which is one of Marie’s favourite terms. Chatoyancy is the optical effect where you see bands of light – like a cats-eye!

This is due to lots of very fine fibres compacted together in straight rows.

When our eyes look at the Gemstone, we see the shimmer of Chatoyancy, but Chaotic Chatoyancy has fibres in random (or chaotic) orientations showing the shimmer in all different patterns all over the Gemstone.

Chatoyant Gemstones are usually cut as Cabochons, Beads or Collectables, which show off the Chatoyant effect. However, it is not just as simple as cutting and polishing the Stone.

It takes great skill and craftsmanship to ensure the quality of the carving shows off the stunning sheen.
