Why is Jet so extraordinary? Most gemstones are composed of the elements that are present as they are growing deep within the earth and have a crystalline structure. However, this doesn’t apply to all gem materials – such as Jet! These are called Organics which means they are produced from living organisms and are not minerals like other gemstones!

Jet is another organic material which has derived from drift-wood that has been subjected to chemical action in stagnant water and subsequently flattened by enormous pressures.

It is a fantastic material to use in jewellery as it is extremely lightweight, so statement pieces can be comfortably achieved. Compare these Jet Rounds to some of our Gemstone Rounds and you will immediately notice the difference!

Jet is a very historical gem material and is famous for being used as mourning jewellery in Victorian times. There are records of Jet being made into pieces in Roman times! There are many displayed at the National Museum of Wales which have been donated from various archaeological digs!

It is common knowledge that Jet can be found in Whitby in the UK. The Jet mines in Whitby on occasion produce large pieces to be cut into round beads but these are rare and costly. So, we need to source elsewhere & are thrilled that we’ve managed to source our Jet at such affordable prices!
