Gemmology Facts:

Turquoise is a Phosphate Mineral that can only be found in limited places across the world. These stunning Gemstones form in dry and unfertile regions where acidic, cooper-rich water seeps down into the ground and reacts with Minerals containing aluminium and phosphorus. This sedimentary process results in porous, semi-translucent to an opaque compound of aluminium phosphate and hydrated cooper. Its bright blue colour comes from copper whilst the deep green shades come from chrome and iron.

You will often find Turquoise with a spider’s web-like pattern. These, usually dark, veins are evidence of the matrix also known as the host-rock.

Turquoise measures 5-6 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness.

The Gemstone market is littered with imitation Turquoise, in particular blue-dyed Howlite.

December’s Birthstone – Turquoise has a range of vivid shades from deep sky blue, blue-green and green.

There are very few Minerals that have a colour as distinctive or well-known.

Crystal Healing Properties:

Turquoise is quite possibly the oldest stone in man’s history, the talisman of kings, shamans and warriors. It has been loved throughout ancient history by indigenous cultures, royalty and more modern free-loving hippies. It’s hard to find a time in history where Turquoise hasn’t been adorned,  from Royal Jewels to boho fingers!

Whilst it is a Gemstone of protection, the colour is femininity, calmness and emotional balance. Often used with the Third eye Chakra, Turquoise is a Gemstone that can help us go a little deeper, so it is also a beneficial talisman for Meditation.

Wearing this Stone signifies your commitment to walking gently in this world – which given the current climate and environmental issues, is such a beautiful reason to don this nature-loving Gemstone. To us, this classic adornment represents the Earth Consciousness in Native American beliefs, whereas the blue and green in Turquoise represents the sky and the earth.
