Chrysoprase Gemmology Facts:

Chrysoprase is a rare and expensive variety of Chalcedony. So it is a microcrystalline quartz variety – which is what Chalcedony is.

Chrysoprase comes in different hues of green through to shades of yellow.

Its usual green colouring comes from traces of nickel; it is different to other Gemstones, such as Emerald or Chrome Chalcedony, which gets its colour from chromium.

Chrysoprase mines have been continuously operating in central Tanzania for more than thirty years; this is where most modern Chrysoprase mining is conducted.

The majority of Chrysoprase was once mined in Poland, but by the Middle Ages, all of those deposits had been used up.
